Every skin tag removal begins with a brief assessment. Dr Raffner examines the lesions to confirm they are skin tags and discusses the most appropriate treatment method. If a growth has unusual features, he will assess it before proceeding to ensure removal is appropriate.
Skin tags (acrochordons) are small, soft, benign growths that commonly develop in areas of friction — the neck, armpits, eyelids, groin and under the breasts. They are harmless, but many patients find them cosmetically bothersome or uncomfortable when they catch on clothing or jewellery.
Treatment Method
Surgical excision
The skin tag is removed using fine surgical instruments under local anaesthetic. The cleanest and most reliable method for larger or pedunculated tags.
Cryotherapy
Liquid nitrogen is applied to freeze the skin tag. Effective for smaller, more superficial tags, which then fall off within 1–2 weeks.
The method is chosen based on the size, location and number of skin tags, and your skin type. Dr Raffner will advise which approach is most suitable at your consultation.
Suitability
Skin tag removal is suitable for most adults with confirmed skin tags. If a lesion has changed in appearance, is bleeding, or has unusual features, it will be assessed before removal to confirm it is a skin tag and not something requiring a different approach. Patients on blood-thinning medication or with certain skin conditions should mention this at booking.
Number of Lesions Included
Multiple skin tags can be treated in a single appointment. The number included in a session is agreed at your consultation based on the number, size and location of the tags. Pricing reflects the number of lesions treated, and this is confirmed before treatment begins.
Aftercare
Most patients return to normal activities the same day. Aftercare instructions are provided after treatment, including guidance on keeping the area clean and protected. For cryotherapy, the treated tag will darken and fall off over 1–2 weeks — this is normal.
Sun protection of the treated area is recommended while it heals to reduce the risk of pigmentation changes.
Scarring and Pigmentation Risks
Surgical removal may leave a small mark that typically fades over time. Dr Raffner uses precise technique to minimise this, and the resulting mark is usually far less noticeable than the original skin tag.
Pigmentation changes are possible at the treatment site, particularly in darker skin types or where cryotherapy is used. This risk is discussed at your consultation, and the treatment method is chosen with your skin type in mind to reduce this possibility.
